Sunday 31st/01/21 An uneventful day becomes an eventful day
Leaving Esperance and heading to Albany where we were to meet our friends, Pat and Allan, all was going well. We’d left reasonably early and although there were quite a few road works going on and we were often stopped, we were still going to be in Albany by early afternoon. When we stopped for lunch at a small roadside rest area, Rob sent a few messages to some of his golf mates and one of them called him to say that Perth and South West Western Australia was going into a 5 day lock-down due to a community transmission of Covid. (It had been 10 months since WA had had their last community transmission of Covid!) To start with, we thought he was joking. I tried to find out what was going on but we had limited mobile coverage where we were and for a while we didn’t know what was happening. Finally we managed to find a radio station that was playing the WA Premier speaking to the community and we realized that this was no joke. In the middle of all this, the main road between Esperance and Albany had some serious road-works happening and part of the road was closed which meant we had to take quite a long detour to get to Albany. Rob had calculated that we would have just made Albany without needing to purchase more fuel but not with the detour. We had to use the spare jerry can of fuel that we always carry to make it to Albany. Arriving at our caravan Park in Albany we met up with Pat and Allan who had driven down from Perth before the lock-down was due to start, at 6PM tonight. We were relieved to discover that Albany is in the Great Southern area of WA and is not part of the lock-down, so fingers crossed we will still be able to do some exploring around here. We will have to keep an eye on what the SA government are recommending too but for now we are still here. We had a lovely dinner with Pat and Allan who are staying in a fairly new studio in the caravan park.
More stop lights!!
