Friday 05/02/21 Helen’s History and Heritage Hike
We had a
lovely dinner last night at The Earl of Spencer Hotel, a very quirky
traditional British pub with a lot of history, being established in 1884
although the building was nearly 20 years older than that. I of course loved
the building and all the old furniture etc. in it. Can I say that it was
actually cold enough for the hotel to have a fire going in the fireplace? Anyway
this morning after a brief stop in the main street of Albany and a visit to a
timber gallery we drove to some more beautiful beaches and scenery around
Nanarup Beach. Unfortunately the weather was closing in and a few showers had
come our way. We returned to Albany and bid a sad farewell to Pat and Allan who
were driving to Perth, via Kantanning, spending a couple of nights in a very
interesting looking building, an old mill that has been converted into a hip
hotel. I spent the afternoon doing a heritage walk around the main streets of Albany.
The town is full of old buildings having been established in 1827 (before Perth
on the Swan River) and is very English looking. I thoroughly enjoyed the
self-guided walk and part of it took me to the Museum of WA which was situated
in “The Residency” building, built in the 1850s. There were the normal museum
displays but one of the galleries had a magnificent display of entries and
prize winners of the Australian Geographic Photography awards. Luckily I was
inside for a while here because outside it was raining and had just about
stopped by the time I was ready to continue my walk.
Private joke, ask Pat
