Friday 12/02/21 Surprises Everywhere
We decided to visit the western end of Fitzgerald River National Park, so I packed some lunch and we headed off. It took us just over an hour and our first stop was the magnificent Point Ann. We were very taken by the beautiful turquoise sea and it was very tempting. I thought that maybe I could go for a swim but alas I didn’t have my bathers. The infrastructure was very impressive, with paths, toilets, BBQs, shelters etc. The whales come into this area every year from July to October. They stay in the bay and apparently it is very easy to watch them from the viewing platforms and also the beach areas. We think we would like to visit this area again during the whale season. There were very few people and we seemed to have the area to ourselves. A man was fishing on the beach and appeared to be catching quite a few fish. We did a short walk here and part of it took us to the remains of the rabbit-proof fence. The other thing that would have been impressive during the spring and early summer, are the wild flowers. It was fairly evident that this area would be covered by a myriad of floral colours. After returning to Bremer Bay, we drove out to the many beautiful beaches just a few kms from the town. Again the water was very tempting but I’ll let the photos do the talking. At one of the beaches, a woman was setting up cones to stop traffic going in. We had already driven in and both Rob and I were out observing the scenery. I walked around an out crop of rocks to see another beach and there I saw a very strange sight of what appeared to be mini graves. I thought that maybe people in Bremer Bay bury their pets out here. A man was “guarding” the area and he explained that it was set up for a movie of the Tim Winton book, Blueback. Walking back to the car I saw a caravan and some tents and seats set up near “the set”. As we were leaving large vans, trucks and many other vehicles were arriving. We suspect that filming was going to happen later in the afternoon, evening, perhaps around sunset.
Me and my
snake
Having eaten lunch at Pt Ann shelter I were returning
to the car with gear while Helen went to the girl’s room and I met my friend. I
was about 10m from the car and saw a 1m snake heading under the front of the
car. Shortly after it decided it wanted to head up into the engine bay, not
good. Alas the fisherman on the beach (who I didn’t know was behind me) came to
the rescue. He used his surf fishing rod to knock it away. Predictably the
snake wasn’t happy and more persuasion with the rod was required for it to head
off into the bush. See photo.
