Monday 22/02/21 Stunning Streaky Bay and surrounds

Before I write todays blog it would be remiss of me not to mention Smokey Bay and Smokey Bay Oysters! I have to admit that while writing the blog last night, I was chatting to a friend and watching the tennis which may have led to me totally forgetting to write about the main industry in Smokey Bay….which of course is aquaculture and the production of the famous Smokey Bay Oysters.  A huge area of the town has buildings and sheds dedicated to the production of oysters and while walking along the jetty, we saw at least 2 oyster boats returning back to shore.

Anyway back to today. We again made the short journey to Streaky Bay in less than an hour. In fact we arrived so early that we stopped in town for a coffee before checking in to the Foreshore caravan park. We have booked in here for 2 nights. We set up and I made some lunch to take with us and headed out to do some of the wonderful drives. The first drive we went on was the Westall Way Loop Drive. Again the coastal scenery was quite spectacular, from high cliffs, to beaches, to rock pools. I’ll let the photos do the talking. At most of the spots we stopped at we were either on our own or with one two other vehicles. The “Granites”, however was a very busy place! Most of the vehicles belonged to surfers who were way out surfing some pretty big waves. Following this drive we continued on to visit a sea-lion colony at Point Labatt Conservation Park. We saw quite a few sea-lions having an afternoon siesta on the sand and rocks but none swimming. On our return to Streaky Bay we called into a spot on private land with some very unusual rock formations, called Murphy’s Haystacks. This was a place where you made a donation in an honesty box to enter and it also had about 10 jars of honey that you could purchase again through the honesty box system. It made me feel really good that in this day and age there are still places where this is possible.  We finished our day out by driving down to the beautiful Back Beach not far out of Streaky Bay.
