Sunday 21/02/21 Sleepy, Smoky Bay

We had an easy drive from Ceduna to Smoky Bay. It’s about 45 kms! I would describe Smoky Bay as a sleepy fishing village.  After setting up and having coffee we went for a walk along the jetty and then around the town. The jetty was originally built in 1910 and was very long as boats pulled in to collect bags of grain. Over the years, with improvements to roads etc. the grain was transported by trucks to Ceduna (Thevenard).  The jetty was badly damaged in the 1940’s by a storm and then shortened. It continued to deteriorate and for many years was not used. It was restored about 12 years ago and is now very long. At the end of the jetty we met a couple who had spent the morning fishing. They said they were from the Gold Coast and come to Smoky Bay every year for a month, to fish. They meet up with another 2 couples in the caravan park and usually go out in a boat and catch King George whiting. Unfortunately it seems that this year has been one of the windiest they have encountered and so they have been jetty fishing quite often. They had a bucketful of garfish and 2 large squid. Not bad for a mornings work. We did a quick walk around the quiet town and noticed many holiday homes, some very grand indeed and a few homes of permanent residents. In the afternoon we drove out to Point Brown. We’d never heard of this place but enjoyed some spectacular sea views. I have to say I find the combination of rough seas, rocky outcrops and the motion of the waves quite mesmerizing.
